This collection contains nine issues of Upstart Magazine, an arts magazine published annually at Barnard. Its purpose was "to expose and give recognition to new artists and journalists." The magazine, with work by students, faculty, and alumni, featured articles about art (theatre, music, etc.), interviews with artists, and student artwork (photography, poems, etc.). For one issue (1979), the magazine was renamed The Paper Ladle. Interviewed artists include Divine, Tom Verlaine, Keith Harring, David Byrne, John Cage, Alan Vega, and others.
