This collections consists of the personal papers of Barnard College Trustee and Treasurer, Francis T. Plimpton. The collection includes correspondence, minutes, and financial records, as well as blueprints, compliance reports, and insurance records documenting the building of Plimpton Hall.

Scope and content:

This collection includes the correspondence, minutes, budgets, audits, and other financial records related to Francis T. Plimpton's service as Treasurer and Trustee of Barnard College. Of note are papers relating to searches for Presidents Martha Peterson and Millicent McIntosh. Also of interest are blueprints, compliance reports, and insurance records documenting the building of Plimpton Hall, and obituaries of Plimpton's father George Arthur Plimpton.

Biographical / historical:

Francis T. Plimpton was named to the Board of Trustees of Barnard College upon the death of his father George A. Plimpton in 1936, and remained in the position until 1984. He served as Treasurer from 1936-1937, was a member of the Committee of Finance and the Investment Committee, and oversaw the construction of Plimpton Hall. Plimpton was a lawyer and founding partner of the firm Debevoise & Plimpton. He served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 1961-1965, and held many advisory posts with the UN throughout his life. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the Royal Society of Arts, and President of the American Bar Association.
