Angus MacLise was a musician, poet, artist, and countercultural figure who was a mainstay of the downtown New York arts scene in the 1960s, which included Fluxus alongside other avant-garde communities and scenes. Hetty MacLise was an English-born artist, poet, and multi-instrumentalist likewise associated with various overlapping movements and milieus within the 1960s and 70s avant-garde. This collection contains papers, documents, publications, ephemera, sound and video recordings, photographs, and artwork primarily created by, given to, or related to Angus MacLise and Hetty MacLise.

There are letters from numerous friends and associates of Cummings, including Kenneth Burke, Malcolm Cowley, Marion Morehouse Cummings (Mrs. E.E. Cummings), John Dos Passos, Max Eastman, Marianne Moore, and Allen Tate. Also, 24 drawings by E.E. Cummings dating from the 1920 and 1930s.

Dowden corresponded with many writers, publishers, editors, and libraries in compiling a comprehensive bibliography of Allen Ginsberg's poetry and prose, published before 1 July 1967. Among the correspondents are Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, John Clellon Holmes, Robert La Vigne, Gerard Malanga, Fernanda Pivano, and Gary Snyder.
