Rodion Mikhailovich Berezov Papers, 1944-1976
4500 itemsCorrespondence, manuscripts, diaries, notebooks, subject files, books and other printed materials of Berezov. The correspondence includes letters from Aleksis Rannit, Alexandra Tolstoy, and the editors of "Novoe russkoe slovo," Mark Weinbaum and Andrei Sedykh (pseudonym of Iakov Tsvibak). There are three different typescript versions and handwritten drafts of Berezov's novel "Volzhskii solovei" as well as manuscripts of his short stories and poems. There are also many notebooks containing drafts of poems and miscellaneous notes. Berezov's diaries cover the years 1944 to 1975. Printed materials include books and clippings about Berezov, also books by other authors from his library. A subject file on Alexandra Tolstoy contains numerous articles concerning her father as well as her work in this country; there are also poems by Berezov which are dedicated to her.

An important part of the collection consists of the correspondence and papers related to the exhibition of L. Frank Baum. This exhibition was mounted at the Columbia University Libraries in 1956 to mark the centenary of Baum's birth. Baum manuscripts, original drawings by illustrators of Baum books, and issues of periodicals in which Baum pieces appeared constitute the core of the collection
Ronald Firbank papers, 1896-1976

Included are nine letters from poet Alfred Douglas, seven from artist Albert Rutherston, four from Rollo Talboys, then schoolmaster at Wellington College, and forty-two letters from Firbank himself to his publisher Grant Richards and his manager George Wiggins. There are four letters from his mother, Lady Harriet, to the publisher and one letter from his father, Joseph Thomas Firbank, while serving in the House of Commons, 1897. Manuscripts include drafts and notebooks for his works: THE ARTIFICIAL PRINCESS, A DISCIPLINE FROM THE COUNTRY, THE RYTHUM, PRANCING N***, THE PRINCESS ZOUBAROFF, TRUE LOVE, and VAINGLORY. There is an inscribed photograph of Firbank from 1904; a pen-and-ink drawing by C.R.W. Nevinson used as a book illustration; and Albert Rutherston's watercolor drawing for the dust jacket of Firbank's novel, INCLINATIONS (London, 1916). There are also cataloged correspondence and manuscripts collected collected by Ifan Kyrle Fletcher for his book, RONALD FIRBANK; A MEMOIR.. (London, 1930).

Colbert Torcy and the Duchesse Du Lude. Many of the items from the French Revolution represent the work of the Committee of Public Safety and the Committee of General Security. French Revolutionary leaders represented in the collection include François-Antoine Boissy D'Anglas, Jean-Baptiste-Noel Bouchotte, Pierre Joseph Cambon, Lazare Carnot, Jean-Marie Collot D'Herbois, l'Abbʹe de Fauchet, Philippe-Antoine Merlin de Douai, Jean Victor Moreau. C.A. Prieur-Duvernois, and Antoine Joseph Santerre. In addition, the collection includes a letter from the Danish physicist Hans Christian Oersted to Sir John Herschel, a letter by the French poet Romain Rolland, a document of the Philadelphia Artists' Fund Society of 1846 with signatures of its officers, and an autograph letter and a photograph of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

The collection consists chiefly of correspondence and production files relating to the creation, production, and performance of their works for stage, screen, radio, and television, such as Leave It To Me and Kiss Me Kate (with music by Cole Porter), Boy Meets Girl, and My Three Angels. Correspondence (with twentieth century authors, playwrights, musicians, political figures, and actors) includes: George Abbott, Jean Arthur, Bennett Cerf, Katharine Cornell, Jo Davidson, George and Ira Gershwin, Alec Guinness, W. Averell Harriman, Lilli Lehmann, Mary Martin, Laurence Olivier, Mary Pickford, Cole Porter, Regina Resnick, Eleanor Roosevelt, Robert E. Sherwood, Lincoln Steffens, Kurt Weill, Rebecca West, and Thornton Wilder. There is also correspondence concerning Bella Spewack's work with the New York Girls' Scholarship, UNRA, and the Sports Center of Israel. In addition to the production files, there are manuscripts and typescript drafts for novels, short stories, and articles by the Spewacks.

Two of them are pretty clearly from the Ramayana." Risha Lee, Jane Emison Assistant Curator of South and Southeast Asian Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, comments on the paintings: "As for the paintings, the first two are almost certainly 19th century, Pahari style, and the first might be an artistic study. The woman (perhaps a court lady or ragini) is seated against a large bolster. The second painting depicts two noblemen seated in conversation outdoors, while underneath them an older nobleman rides an elephant and carries a trident, possibly a symbol of Shiva. The other two fragmentary paintings are very nicely executed: the first depicts Hanuman attended by his monkey entourage paying homage to some individual, if it is not Rama, perhaps it is the seated Krishna who appears in the second fragment, which depicts a blue skinned male wearing a yellow dhoti, with sages seated underneath him.".
