Annotated proofs and a letter, including proof copies, extensively revised for publication, of Cabell's GALLANTRY (short stories) and THE JEWEL MERCHANTS (a play) and a letter to a Mr. Hagerup about his works. Also, a signed typescript of Louis Untermeyer's introduction to GALLANTRY; and two letters from Cabell to Henry Blake Fuller.

Drafts and manuscripts of Pickering's short stories, articles, and books including 1001 QUESTIONS ANSWERED ABOUT ASTRONOMY, THE STARS ARE YOURS, FAMOUS ASTRONOMERS, ASTERISKS, CAPTIVES OF THE SUN, MEN SPACE AND THE STARS, and WINDOWS TO SPACE. The files also contain correspondence relating to these works.

Papers of the Jay family and of those families related to the Jay family, including Bruen, Butterworth, Chapman, Clarkson, Dawson, Du Bois, Field, Iselin, McVickar, Mortimer, O'Kill, Pellew, Pierrepont, Prime, Robinson, Schieffelin, Von Schweinitz, Sedgwick, and Wurts. In addition to family and personal matters, the correspondence deals with anti-slavery, New York State civil service, repeal of the Missouri Compromise, the Civil War, the Blair Bill, international affairs, and New York City and State politics and government. There are letters from numerous prominent persons including George Bancroft, F.A.P. Material gathered by Oswald Garrison Villard in the researches for his biography JOHN BROWN, 1800-1859: A BIOGRAPHY FIFTY YEARS AFTER. A large part of the materials is copies of correspondence both contemporary and of a later period, concerning John Brown and his associates, especially in the Kansas Territory and at the Harper's Ferry raid. Of the original letters in the collection, many are from descendants and family of John Brown and the men who accompanied him on his raid. There are clippings, pamphlets, proof sheets, and other printed matter. Photographs number 181 items.

The files of John Cushman Associates, Inc. include correspondence with authors, publishers, and other agents and deal with the editing and publishing of American and English books, serial rights, reprints, dramatic rights, translations, foreign rights, promotion, and copyright registration.

Correspondence, manuscripts, reports, research files, audiotapes, and photographs documenting Backer's research and writing on General Clay and post war German affairs; his service in the military government, as a member of the Foreign Service, and as the supervisor of the U.S. Information Agency officer in numerous German cities. In researching his three books, Backer interviewed a number of public and military figures on audiotapes. There are several letters each from W. Averell Harriman, John Kenneth Galbraith, George Kennan, and John J. McCloy. The collection includes several boxes of photocopies of documents from various sources.
