11 linear feetLetters and papers including correspondence extending in date from 1873 to 1930 and consisting principally of letters to Dr. Burgess from friends, associates, and contemporary scholars in the field of political science, and dealing with academic and scholarly subjects, the publication of his various writings, his teaching career, business, and personal affairs. Included are some original letters written by Burgess and copies of others. The letters to Burgess are from Europe and America with the majority in English, but a number are in German. Also, twenty-two file boxes containing manuscript and typescript notes for lectures, courses, articles, addresses, books, and more correspondence relating to these.

31 linear feetProfessor of Political Science at Columbia (including several stints as Chair of the Department), 1955-1994, The collection includes archival ms. boxes and record cartons, as well as non-archival cartons. Each unit is accompanied by a detailed accession slip; boxes had no original numbering, so for surveying purposes, a number was penciled onto the accession slip and recorded as the original unit number. There is little to no organization of the material, which is mainly loose office paper (largely correspondence and manuscripts) housed in non-archival envelopes and folders, or loose, and bound academic journals and pamphlets. Most of the material covers the topics of Eastern European/Russian Studies, and there is much academic and administrative material as well. There is a significant amount of material in German, Russian, Polish; some Hebrew, French, and Spanish.

There is manuscript material relating to the Bergel-Hauptman case and a number of Bergel's own essays and reviews. A copy of Bergel's German passport is included, as well as numerous family photographs and miscellaneous printed material. There is a cataloged photograph of Hugo von Hofmannsthal; and a gold Benedetto Croce centennial medal.

It also includes an unfinished Sunday strip and an unfinished daily of "Dr Goodlow, Psychologist," which does not appear to have reached publication; a Tarzan panel drawn as her audition for Fiction House; and an original Nick Cardy page from "Senorita Rio" in Fight Comics #26. There are also a small number of Austrian documents, such as Lily Renee's birth certificate and high school diploma, and Nazi-era documents of her parents.
