Allen Wardwell Papers, 1917-1941

These papers chiefly concern the 1917-1918 American Red Cross Mission to Russia, in which Wardwell served, and his involvement in efforts to support trade with and aid to Russia in 1919-1924; he was chairman of the Russian Famine Fund in that period. There are a few items concerning the 1941 W.A. Harriman-Lord Beaverbrook mission to Russia, in which Wardwell participated. Materials on the Red Cross Mission are chiefly from May-October 1918, when Wardwell commanded it; they consist of correspondence, reports, documents, many photographs, and transcribed excerpts from Wardwell's diary and letters home. Major correspondents include Georgiĭ Chicherin, Lev Trot︠s︡kiĭ, and Raymond Robins. Records of Wardwell's efforts in regard to Russia in 1919-1924 consist of extensive correspondence files with prominent Americans, such as Robins and Herbert Hoover, manuscripts, related printed materials, and Wardwell's diary of his trip to Russia in the fall of 1922.

The first installment of the CCEIA archival materials came to the RBML in 1974, with numerous additions over the years. A major addition in 1982 contained primarily the records of the Board of Directors and their semi-annual meetings, as well as the various programs and institutes of the Council, for the years 1972-1982, along with selected 1930s materials. 1986 addition contains presidential correspondence files, minutes of the Board of Trustees and committees, special projects, programs and conferences files, and the business and editorial files of "Worldview". Correspondents include John Foster Dulles, Jane Addams, Fiorello La Guardia, and Paul Tillich. 1990 and 2000 additions includes files of CCEIA presidents and vice presidents, paper and audiovisual materials on Merrill House Conversation Programs; Educational programs; International Monetary Fund/Lecture series; The Annals Of The Academy Of Political & Social Science; Washington Consultations; Colloquia for the Clergy; Church State Project; Asian Development & The Carribean Initiative; Korea: Year 2000 Project; fundraising files, printed materials and files of the Department of Publications.

3100 itemsThese papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, documents, and printed materials. Most of the correspondence concerns Florinsky's publications and editorial work. Among the correspondents are Boris Bakhmeteff, Michael Karpovich, Aleksandr Meyendorff, Bernard Pares, James T. Shotwell, and Dmitriĭ Svi︠a︡topolk-Mirskiĭ: there are one or two items each from John Dewey, Herbert Hoover, Edwin Seligman, and Harry S. Truman. Manuscripts by Florinsky include his "Russia: A Short History" and some minor articles and book reviews. Other manuscripts include a poem by Bernard Pares and a study by Sergeĭ Prokopovich of the Soviet five-year plan of 1946-50; there is also a photograph of Meyendorff. Documents concern Florinsky's career at Columbia and also include book contracts. Printed materials consist chiefly of reviews of his works and reviews he wrote of others' books.
