2 boxesForty-three letters to Witmark which were taken out of autographed books given to the University by Mr. Witmark. The letters are from leading authors and artists of the world, chief among them John Kendrick Bangs, Harry B. Smith, and Frederick Kummer. They are mostly friendly notes, some of them in connection with Witmark's requests that authors autograph books for his library. Also, eight manuscript music scores written by various composers including Victor Herbert for the wedding of Witmark and Viola Cahn; and printed matter including programs, clippings, and prospectuses, two autographed photographs, and a typescript catalog of the "Autograph Library of Isidore Witmark, Esq.".

22 itemsItems written by or relating to the American poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892) as collected by Williams. There are three autograph letters signed from Whitman to Williams, 1884, 1887, n.d., regarding contributions by the poet to the PHILADELPHIA PRESS, as well as one postal card dated 1890. Also, two proofs of poems with corrections in Whitman's hand and four envelopes; a broadside containing lines from Whitman's poetry, five pages of manuscript notes on remarks made by Whitman on some occasion, two letters, one manuscript receipt, and three printed items concerned with a speech by Whitman, a testimonial, the choice of a speaker for his funeral, and the proposal to purchase the house in which he died, for a memorial. There are two prospectuses for books about the poet, and two placards advertising his books.

The collection contains correspondence from Sherwood Anderson, Havelock Ellis, Zona Gale, Lewis Mumford, Bertrand Russell, Wilbur Daniel Steele, Ruth Suckow, Frank Swinnerton, Rebecca West, and Virginia Woolf, as well as carbon copies of Oscar Lewis' replies.

1 boxMaterials by A. N. Skriabin include: a brief letter to Usacheva; a poem he wrote to her; his autograph; piano exercises; and a brief composition. (All these appear to be in Skribin's hand.) There are also clippings and book (Aleknsandr Nikolaevich Skriabin, 195-1940: Sbornik k 25-letiiu so dnq smerti. M., L., 1940)about Skriabin. Also in the collection is a memoir by Usacheva about Usacheva's second husband, Il'ia Gurliand, who was an assistant of Petr Stolypin and also a journalist. There are also two postcards from M. A. Maklakovoi to Usacheva, materials about V. A. Maklakov.

135 linear feetCollection contains watercolor renderings, sketches, technical drawings (ground plans, elevations and details), photographs, glass plate and acetate negatives, scrapbooks, set models and some related papers covering Urban's career in Vienna and New York as an architect, set designer, decorator and illustrator. There is a thorough representation of his New York career including his set designs for Florenz Ziegfeld (1915-1932) and the Metropolitan Opera (1917-1933). The collection also contains information on Urban's work for William Randolph Hearst as art director for Cosmopolitan Studios, his exhibitions including his 1921 Wiener Werkstätte store, and his many architectural projects. Biographical information and research gathered by Richard Cole and Randolph Carter including contributions from his daughter,Gretl Urban, and biographical notes and some letters from his widow, Mary Urban, are also present.
Leo Tolstoy Letters, 1897-1937
124 itemsThe collection consists of 124 letters from Count Leo Tolstoy and members of his family to Aylmer Maude, the English translator of his works. There are 69 letters from Count Leo Tolstoy, eighteen letters from Countess Tolstaia, eleven letters from Sergei Tolstoi (his son), 25 letters from his four daughters, Alexandra, Olga, Marya, and Tatiana, and one letter from Anna Konstantinovna Chertkova. The letters deal with such subjects as "What is art?", the "Resurrection" fund, Tolstoy's health, censorship, Ruskin, the banishment of the Dukhobors to Siberia, Tolstoy's doctrine of non-resistance, Jewish pogroms, famine in Russia, murder of Alexander II, etc. There are letters from the countess which reflect her feelings about the Chertkov's connection with Tolstoy and a letter from Sergei informing Maude that Tolstoy had left home to die, 1910. Subsequent letters deal with posthumous publications of Tolstoy's works.
